Welcome to the 2009-10 School Year!

Extracurricular Activities and You!

Dear Students,

Imagine yourself filling out a college application and getting to the section where you are asked to list your extracurricular, community, and volunteer activities.  Imagine being asked about your major accomplishments such as musical instrument played, varsity letters earned etc.  What will you write down?

We want you to be prepared for the future.  Westwood High School offers a variety of clubs and organizations to get involved and help you gain the vital experience and skills that colleges, universities and employers are looking for.  Students who participate in activity programs tend to have higher grade point averages, better attendance records, lower dropout rates and fewer discipline problems than students who don't participate (National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) 1999).

Colleges and universities are looking for students who are well rounded socially and academically.  Consider the benefits of joining a club and taking on a leadership role.  Whatever role you take whether you are a treasurer, secretary, president or participant, the experience will help you develop leadership and management skills.  These are the skills that will improve your relationships with others and last a lifetime.

Extracurricular activities also serve your community.  Join a  service learning club such as New Global Citizens, NHS, Y Achievers and Student Council.  You will gain valuable skills, earn hours towards a seal on your diploma and strengthen your community!

By participating in activities throughout your high school career you will be ready to fill out that college application with ease!

Westwood High School is the place where you can make new friends, challenge yourself, develop your resume and give something back in return!

I look forward to working with you and wish you a happy and successful school year.
