7th & 8th Grade General Math
Patrick J. McDonnell
Welcome to Mr. McDonnell’s General Math class. This course is designed to help students obtain the skills need for your success in your next level math class. We will be covering topics such as integers, solving equations, graphing, ratios, proportions and percents.
Keys to Success
The first key is a success in this class is good attendance. Students who miss the opportunity for classroom instruction that is given daily find success much more difficult. The second key is being prepared. Being prepared is having the proper supplies and completed assignments to each class. The third key is to have a positive attitude about themselves and the class.
Grading
The grades will be calculated from five categories and averaged as follows:
Tests 25%
Quizzes 25%
Class work 20%
Homework 20%
Signed Progress Reports 10%
Semester grades will be an average of the two quarters.
Homework
Homework is assigned daily, except for the day before holidays and weekends. The purpose of homework is for the students to practice what has been covered in class. Homework is never assigned as a punishment. Homework is expected to be turned in the next class after it is assigned. Late homework is not accepted.
Class work
After several opportunities of guided and independent practice, students will be given class work assignments that will be graded. These will be announced assignments. These assignments will be accepted late, with some penalty. All late assignments will be sent home for a parent signature. This way the parents know that the assignment was late.
Make-Up Work
If a student is absent, it will be the student’s responsibility to get the work, off the daily calendar and get the notes. The students will have one week to turn in the make up work. If a student misses a test or quiz, we must work to find a time when the test or quiz can be taken.
Progress Reports
Progress reports will be sent home several times during the course of the quarter. This progress report will show the grade in each of the four categories that formulates his or her grade. It will also show all missing assignments. A district progress report will also be sent home at the half way point of the quarter.
Parent Contact
If parents wish to contact me, it is best to call me ay 472-2747, between 8:15 and 8:45. I can also be reached through the district e-mail pjmcdonn@mpsaz.org. I will respond as quickly as possible.
Discipline
All students are expected to conduct themselves in a way that will lend to a positive learning environment. Students are expected to use the restroom before entering the classroom. Students are expected to keep their hands, feet and other objects to themselves. Students are expected to be seated and ready to work when the bell rings. Students are expected to be prepared with paper, pen or pencil and the completed assignments.
I’m looking forward to a fantastic year.
