What Makes Sousa Special (top)

Sousa Elementary is a unique school with a family environment that is located in east Mesa overlooking the Superstition Mountains. Come take a look around our beautiful open campus and check out our Desert Study Area, a natural habitat set aside for instruction. Visit on a Friday afternoon and see our Friday Assemblies that feature a flag ceremony and the National Anthem. Throughout the year, each class showcases an educational performance at each assembly, Sousa's band and orchestra perform for the school, and students are honored as Student of the Week. On the last Friday of each month, one student from each class is recognized as Student of the Month. Students are also recognized if they make it into the  Math Master and/or Word Wise Clubs with new t-shirts and a trip onto the stage. These clubs are a positive reinforcement for improving math facts and phonics skills.

Service Learning is a big part of everyday life at Sousa. Students are always working on projects to help out in our school, community, country or world. Stop by the media center to check out the sewing center and what current projects Sousa students are working on.

Several events are held at night to allow parents to come visit our campus and see what their students are doing. Night of Celebration/Curriculum night is usually held in the spring. Each class displays work and special projects. Families are encouraged to come and tour the campus and  see what a great school Sousa is.

A talent show is held annually at Sousa. Students audition and are selected by judges to perform in two shows, one in the afternoon for the student body and a night performance for parents and family.

Sousa has a growing and very active Parent Teacher Organization. The PTO is very supportive of teachers and always willing to help around campus either financially or physically. The PTO sponsors events such as: family movie nights, Valentine Grams, pumpkin decorating, carnivals, Breakfast with Santa, smoothie sales, and teacher dinners during conferences just to name a few.

Weekly progress reports are sent home each Friday with every student to ensure that parents know how their child is doing in school. This is a great form of communication for teachers and parents.
