Biography
I was born in Michigan, raised in rural northern Arizona where I graduated from Coconino High School in Flagstaff. I attended ASU where I majored in Latin American history. In my junior year, my high school sweetheart, Mike Casillas, and I were married (and still are). We graduated two years later at which time we started working on our graduated degrees at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. We were both working in Ph. D. programs when we discovered that we were about to become parents for the first time. Our daughter, Andrea Maria, was born in 1980. By 1983 I had gotten by credentials in Secondary Education and my Masters Degrees in Spanish and Portuguese. We moved to Garden City, Kansas where my husband got his first teaching job, and spent a year there. A year later, we returned to Arizona where we had our second child, Marcos. I did my student teaching at Dobson High and the following fall I was hired at Mesa High by Bob Free. I spent two years at Mesa High School. I interviewed and was one of the teachers selected to open up the Red Mountain, the new school. I am currently teaching Dual Enrollment Spanish III and Spanish II. I have taught all levels of Spanish from Spanish I to AP Spanish (which I taught for several years).
I love to read mystery novels, I love family get-togethers with tacos and refried beans and Spanish rice. Baseball is my favorite sport. I love the Diamondbacks, but the Pittsburgh Pirates are one of my favorite teams because of the years of "family" and because of the grace and class of the great Roberto Clemente. I love northern Arizona. I love rain. I love art, music and when a student works hard and finally "gets it!" These are a few of my favorite things.
