Mesa Public Schools' certified and classified staff personnel may request to offer a district in-service based on the following:
The course

The instructor has expertise in content and adult teaching skills, and demonstrates professional demeanor.

Procedures to Offer a District Course
Application Procedure and Approval

Download the Application to Offer a District Course forms.

Submit the completed application and the Service and Materials Request form, to Professional Development. If this is the first time a class is to be offered, then Teaching Touchstones must be submitted with the application. (See the downloads section below for a copy of the Teaching Touchstones.)

Applications must be submitted at least four weeks prior to the course start date.

Summer Institute applications are accepted through the first week in April.

More time is needed if course materials must be ordered outside of MPS. Note: Incomplete applications will not be placed on the website or registration taken until the application is complete.

Instructors of previously offered courses must submit page 1 of the application every time the course is to be offered. Responses to items on page 2 of the application must be submitted if changes have been made to the course.

If an out-of-district instructor/consultant is being employed by a department for an in-service course or activity, the person at the department or school site who arranged for the consultant is responsible for completing and submitting the Application to Offer a District Course to the Professional Development Department several weeks prior to the beginning date and for ensuring successful completion of other instructor responsibilities. If a department is partnering with another school district for consultant services;

the sponsoring department handles all outside registration, the purchase order, etc.;

the sponsoring department must note the information on the Application to Offer a District Course or attach an addendum with pertinent information;

the number of participants on the application should only reflect MPS registrations available.

Course Location

Instructors are responsible for reserving the location/room and for completing a Permit for Use of School Facilities if appropriate. If there are any changes in the location, please notify the Professional Development Department immediately at 472-0388. For classes scheduled on Saturday, please contact 472-0388 for further information.
Flyers

Flyers are usually not necessary for advertised courses; however, if the instructor or sponsoring department wishes to distribute a flyer, the flyer must be submitted to Professional Department for approval. Please follow the format in order to provide the necessary information.

Do NOT distribute flyers until the course is published on the registration system.
Professional Development Support

provide instructors access to information about their offered courses at www.mpsprofdev.org/management/login_form
- prepare participants' packets to be picked up by the instructor two days prior to the first session - if any revisions to materials are needed, the request must be received at least three weeks prior to the first class session
- order supplies - the cost of production and duplication of materials is usually incurred by the Professional Development Department; however, fees will be charges for materials beyond the normal packet production and instructor supplies. Note: Sponsoring departments are responsible for book orders.

- compile participants evaluations and provide a copy to the instructor, sponsoring department, director, and specialist within three weeks of last course session
Copyright
- The Professional Development Department reserves the right to monitor the reproduction and/or use of any instructional materials in regard to copyright laws.
Instructor Salary
- Instructors of approved in-service courses and activities will be compensated based on the MPS/Mesa Education Association negotiated agreement.
- Preparation time is included at 1/2 hour for every hour of direct instruction. For example, if the instructor rate is $20 per hour and the curriculum rate is $14 per hour, you would receive $27 per hour with a total of $216 for an eight hour course.
- If a consultant is the instructor then an MPS employee will be paid the direct instruction rate to facilitate the course/in-service.
