Students receive a solid academic foundation for high school course work

Franklin Junior High continues the expectations of the elementary program to support a cohesive learning environment free from distraction. The program encourages students to build a solid academic foundation for high school course work.

The curriculum focuses on literacy skills and whole-group instruction in a highly structured academic day. Students receive a challenging and rewarding educational experience that encourages the development of individual talents and motivates success.

This year, the campus serves seventh-graders. Eighth-grade will be added in 2010-11. Ninth-grade will be added in 2011-12.

MPS designed the original award-winning Franklin concept, curriculum in 1978

The Franklin back-to-basics, or traditional, curriculum was originally developed by Mesa Public Schools in 1978. The concept gave families an option to their neighborhood schools. Parents embraced the Franklin elementary program and, today, there are four campuses serving children in kindergarten through sixth-grade.

In the past two years, two of those schools — Franklin Northeast and Franklin West elementaries  — were named Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education. This prestigious national award honors schools that are academically superior.

Parents play vital roles at Franklin schools

Education is a partnership among students, parents and the school. Research shows that parent participation increases a student's academic success. Parents are expected to be involved in their child's studies and to volunteer time for Franklin Junior High activities.

Students and parents must sign a commitment letter indicating an understanding of Franklin Junior High expectations. If a student fails to uphold the commitment and the parents do not support the child's education, the student may be asked to return to his or her neighborhood school.
