AVID is a fourth- through twelfth-grade system to prepare students in the academic middle for four-year college eligibility.  It has a proven track record in bringing out the best in students, and in closing the achievement gap.  AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.

AVID students are those who have potential for college success but need support. Typically they would the first in their family to attend college.

AVID provides an elective class that supports these students as they are enrolled in advanced classes through training in writing, inquiry, collaboration, reading, and organizational skills.

Since 1999, Mesa Public Schools has grown the AVID program to include three National Demonstration Schools: Westwood High School, Carson Junior High, and Powell Junior High.  These schools have been recognized as demonstrating the highest level of program implementation and are used as models for other schools. In addition to those schools, AVID is currently in place at  Mesa High, Dobson High,
Kino Jr. High, Mesa Jr. High,  Rhodes Jr. High and Taylor Jr. High.
