What is the homework load like? top

Individual teachers determine homework assignments on a daily basis however, our teachers work together to provide a comfortable homework load over the course of the week.  We certainly do not want to overwork our students simply because they are capable.  We are aware of the need for balance in work and play.  Our expectation is that homework be meaningful and rigorous as well as reasonable.  Under most circumstances, students have approximately 10 minutes of homework per grade level.  For example, a 5th grader might have 50 minutes of homework on a given night, while a 9th grader could have closer to 90 minutes.

How are students placed in classes? top

All students are placed in the appropriate grade level class for their academic courses with the following exception; all students new to the Academy take a math pre-assessment to ensure they are appropriately placed.  Returning Academy students are placed in math by teacher recommendation based on demonstrated classroom performance.  Band and orchestra students are required to audition for placement.
